MUMBAI: Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi was arrested on Wednesday on the charge of promoting between groups and granted bail within an hour by a court here after he furnished a bond of Rs 10,000, his lawyer said.

Azmi, picked up from his Colaba residence, was produced before the Bhoiwada court in Central Mumbai immediately after his arrest.

Though the police sought Azmi's custody, the magistrate granted him a judicial custody for 14 days time upon which his lawyers moved a bail plea successfully, his lawyer A Q Usmani said.

The media was not allowed inside the court room.

Azmi, an MP, has been charged with making inflammatory statements at a political rally in Shivaji Park on February 3.

The police had registered case against him on February 10 at the Shivaji Park police station under IPC sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 153 A (promoting enmity between groups on the basis of places of birth, residence etc), 153 D (assertions prejudicial to national integration) and 117 (abetting the comission of any offence by the public).
