NHRC notice to Maharashtra govt
New Delhi: Describing the attacks on North Indians in Maharashtra as a serious issue of human rights violation, the NHRC on Monday issued notice to the State government and sought its reply within four weeks. The Commission had taken a suo moto cognisance of a report alleging that a person fled Nasik with his family after he and his family was beaten up by Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers.Drawing the attention of the state Chief Secretary to the reports highlighting that one Sanjiv Singh had fled Nashik with his family due to terror and violence by MNS activists, the rights panel said that if found true it amounts to serious violation of human rights.
Quoting the reports, the panel said "these people were threatened by MNS workers to leave Maharashtra or face consequences." The report also said that another person Rehman Bhai also alleged that MNS activists threatened them.
